Obituary

Philip F. Neuerman, 93, of Crestline, died Friday, May 11, 2018 at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield Hospital, Mansfield.

Phil was born in Muncie, IN on February 5, 1925 to the late Walter and Mertie (Walters) Neuerman. He married Mary Louise Barker on January 9, 1948 and she survives him.

Philip graduated from Muncie Central in 1943 and graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science degree and received his Master of Arts degree from Colorado State. He also had accomplished advanced graduate work at The Ohio State University.

He was a business education teacher at Mansfield Senior High School where he taught from 1954 until his retirement in 1982. During his last seven years at Mansfield, he was chairman of the Business Department and headed the Cooperative Office Education program. He was treasurer of Senior High School for 13 years and treasurer of the Richland School Employees Credit Union for 14 years.

He began his part-time bank career with First National Bank of Crestline in 1955 retiring from the bank in 1990. In the intervening years he had an active role in several Crestline organizations. Among the agencies he served was the Crestline Area United Appeal where he was treasurer for 20 years; the Crestline YMCA, bookkeeper for four years; Colverdale Restaurant, bookkeeper for 11 years; and secretary-treasurer of R.R. Industries for 10 years. He was a Crestline Lions Club member for over 60 years and held the positions of secretary and many years as treasurer. He had been very active in his church, holding many positions and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline.

During WWII, Mr. Neuerman served as an Engineer-Gunner on a B-29 in the South Pacific on Tinian Island where he flew 25 combat missions against Japan. The last 24 were fairly routine, since his first mission ended when his plane was shot down and he and the crew spent 19 hours in a life raft before being rescued. His military decorations include the American Theater Ribbon; Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars; Good Conduct Medal; Purple Heart Medal; Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters; and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

In addition to his wife, Mary Louise, he is survived by his son, Philip Michael Neuerman of Indianapolis, IN; his grandson, Philip John “P.J.” Neuerman of Marysville; and great-grandson, Philip Nathaniel Neuerman of Marysville.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Russell and Orville Neuerman; sister-in-law, Peggy Neuerman; and niece. Marilyn York.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 223 W. Main St., Crestline. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline with Pastor Diana Seaman officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline. Full military honors will be given at the graveside by the U.S. Army and the Crestline/Galion Veterans Military Funeral Burial Detail.
