Arthur Laferty, 89, of Crestline, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at the Crestline Nursing Home.
Arthur was born in Hippo, KY on May 8, 1932, to the late Lonnie and Poppie (Shepherd) Laferty. He married Joan (Simmermacher) Laferty on June 28, 1952, and she survives him in Crestline.
Arthur was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Crestline. He honorably served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he achieved the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Campaign Stars, the National Defense Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal. As Arthur felt it was very important to obtain his High School Diploma, he entered into a G.E.D. program, and achieved that goal at the age of 70. He was the keynote speaker at his own graduation and was voted "student of the week" many times. Arthur worked most of his life at Swan Rubber, in Bucyrus, retiring in 1998. He also was employed as a greeter at Meijer for eleven years, retiring in 2016. To Arthur, family was everything and always came first. He cherished his time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was very proud of his entire family.
In addition to his wife, Arthur is survived by children; Arlene Kay (Thomas) Smith, Crestline; Allen (Sherrill) Laferty, Crestline; eight grandchildren; Jonathon Smith; Jaclyn Smith; Abby Smith; Sarah Laferty; Matthew Laferty; Carissa Smith; Mackenzie Smith; Logan Smith; four great-grandchild; Tyson Smith; Zachery Smith; Josephyne Smith; Gretchen Smith; his five sisters; Josie Furr, Kentucky; Marie Yontz, Sandusky; Effie Voltz, Florida; Barbara Wagner, Houston, TX; Linda Smith, Norwalk; and his brother Mitchell Laferty, Glasgow, KY.
Arthur was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Smith; and his eight siblings; Hancer Laferty, Ottis Laferty, Joshua Laferty, Curtis Ray Laferty, Tincey Grimes, Sara Haine, Obie Laferty, and Ocie Collins.
Friends may call from 12:00 PM until the time of service at 2:00 PM on Monday, September 13, 2021, at the Schneider-Gompf Funeral Home, 223 West Main St., Crestline. A private burial will take place at Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline, where full military honors will be rendered by the U.S. Army and the Crestline-Galion Veteran's Military Funeral Detail.
