Betty Joyce Shultz, 90, of Galion, passed away Monday July 24, 2023, surrounded by her family. Betty was born on July 18, 1933, in Hazleton, PA to the late John and Helen (Shaffer) Polgrean.
Betty graduated from Hazleton High School, class of 1951. During her senior year of high school, Betty worked at Bell Telephone, as a switchboard operator, where she received a special award for saving a life. She then went to Marion Technical College to obtain her Associate Degree in Business. After graduating college, Betty went to work for the National Tractor Pulling Association as a Membership Director. She also worked at Floyd Brown Associates as an Office Administrator. Lastly, Betty retired at the age of 65 from GTE as a Customer Service Representative.
Betty was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Marion, OH. Betty was a caring, funny, and wonderful mother and grandmother. Betty was the full-time caregiver for her daughter, Sharon, who suffered from Multiple Sclerosis. She made it a point to educate her daughters on the significance of each state as they traveled to 48 states. Betty had a passion for cooking which is why she was able to pass down her Italian dish recipes to her daughters.
She loved watching reality TV, crime shows, and old movies that aided with the conversationalist that she was. She could always be found dressed from head to toe in Buckeye gear while supporting her favorite Ohio State team. She never missed a game. Betty took pleasure in the challenging Sudoku puzzles she would complete. Betty had a soft spot for animals, especially her grand fur babies. She was a big supporter of rescuing animals. Betty took pride in the many hours she spent tending to her garden in her younger years. Even at the age of 90, Betty was computer/tech savvy. She found enjoyment in texting with emojis and sending GIFs and memes.
Betty is survived by her daughters; Debra (Dale) Shultz-Horton of Galion, Marybeth (Paul) Shultz-Wittkopf of McArthur, OH, Krista Shultz-McGinnis of Delaware, OH, brother; William Polgrean of Poughkeepsie, NY, grandchildren; Megan (Brian) Darrah, Natalie (Alex) Stewart, Thomas Wittkopf, and Christopher J. McGinnis.
Along with her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Burtch and brother, Jack Polgrean.
Service and burial at Conyngham Union Cemetery, Pennsylvania will be celebrated at a later date.
