John Shirley Boals

John Shirley Boals, 90, of Crestline passed away on Sunday, May 2, 2021 at Crestwood Care Center in Shelby after a brief illness.

John was born in Crestline on September 2, 1930 to the late Charles and Frances (Shoup) Boals. On April 27, 1957 he married Pamela Hammerberg (Marquart) and she survives in Crestline.

John was a 1948 graduate of Crestline High School, after High School he would serve his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. during the Korean War. After his time in the service John attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh where he studied to become a graphic designer. John was a member of the Crestline Lion's Club, and the American Legion Post 488, Crestline. He enjoyed drawing, and his specialties were old buildings and trains. John was self-employed as a graphic designer for many years. He was extremely creative, designing the local war monument as well as many other local logos and signs. John also did a lot of work with The Shunk Museum in town. He was a loving family man and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, John is survived by two daughters; Kristi Boals-Spriggs of Crestline, and Julie (Michael) Laribee of Crestline; one sister, Jean (Donald) Beck of Crestline; 3 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren with one on the way.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a grandson; Shawn Spriggs.

The family will observe calling hours at Ontario United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 16, 2021 from 1:00-2:00pm with a memorial service immediately following with Pastor Chris Bell officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery, Crestline at a later date.
