Martin Joseph Malatin, 80, of Waterford, MI, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021, in the Villa at Green Estates, in Waterford, Michigan.
Marty was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 15, 1941, to the late Martin B. and Josephine A. (Gruss) Malatin. He married Delores L. (Miller) Malatin on May 3, 1968, and she survives him in Waterford, Michigan.
Marty graduated from Benedictine High School, Class of 1959. He attended Kent State University for a few years where he played football as a running back for the Golden Flashes. Afterwards, he was drafted by the Cleveland Browns but was hurt and ended up going to play on the squad of the Detroit Lions. While on the squad of the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions he took part in the movies "The Fortune Cookie" and the "Paper Lion" respectively. Afterwards, Marty obtained his undergraduate degree and Master of Education & Counseling degree from Oakland University. He was a PE teacher, and wrestling and football coach at Lake Orion High School District for thirty years. Marty enjoyed golfing, going to the casino, and cheering on the football Buckeyes of The Ohio State University. Marty was a member St. Perpetua Catholic Church, Waterford, Michigan.
In addition to his wife of fifty-three years, Marty is survived by; a daughter, Jodi Malatin Ruiz; a son, Martin B. Malatin; grandson, John; granddaughter, Vivien; sister, Barbara (John) DiPietro; brother, John J. Malatin; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and his dear friend, Gene Lupino.
In addition to his parents, Marty was preceded in death by his sister, Donna Niedermyer.
Friends may call on Saturday, December 4, 2021, from 11:00 AM until the time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 PM at St. Perpetua Catholic Church, 134 Airport Road, Waterford, Michigan. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, December 16, 2021, at 12:00 PM, at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, County Road 330, East Main Street, Crestline, Ohio, with Father Jeff Smith, Celebrant.
