Mary Ellen was born in Morrow County, Ohio on April 13, 1925, to the late Edward A. and Margaret E. (Garverick) Hedrick.

Mary Ellen graduated on May 13, 1942 with 9 other students from Edison High School, near Mount Gilead. She was always proud of the fact that she did very well in school and was even allowed to skip a grade! After graduating, Mary Ellen went to work for North Electric Co. in Galion.

She married Glenn R. DeWitt on April 21, 1946, and he preceded her in death on March 5, 2011.

Mary Ellen and Glenn lived on a farm north of Galion for most of their lives. She was a devoted homemaker, wife, and mother. Mary Ellen enjoyed reading and was a very knowledgeable person. She was a strong Republican and served as Presiding Judge on the Jefferson Township Election Board for over 20 years. She belonged to St. Paul United Methodist Church. There she served as a lay reader and substitute pianist. She claimed one of her greatest accomplishments was learning to play piano on her own! She was an exemplary humanitarian who volunteered for several organizations including Galion Hospital TWIG and Meals on Wheels.

Mary Ellen is survived by her son, Richard (Trudy) DeWitt of Tennessee; her granddaughter, Krystal (Matt) Grossi of Cleveland, Ohio and grandson, Glenn (Kim) DeWitt; her sisters, Marie Foster of Climax, Ohio and Betty Runge of Mt. Gilead, Ohio and a great-granddaughter, Lillian Grossi and a soon to be great granddaughter, Olivia DeWitt.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by an infant son, two brothers, and two sisters.
