Michele "Shelley" Planey Obituary

Michele "Shelley" Planey, Mount Gilead, died at her home on August 27, 2021, surrounded by her family, children, and husband of 21 years. It would be wrong to say that Shelley lost her battle with cancer because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she was always determined. When anyone else would have broken, Shelley stayed strong. Through her, we know what resilience and perseverance genuinely look like. Shelley's faith and personal relationship with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, helped her fight her brief battle with cancer courageously, bringing comfort and peace during the past several months.

On February 11, 1971, she was born one of three daughters to William and Connie (Kinzer) Beery. A 1989 graduate of Mansfield Christian School, Shelley found her calling in life, serving and encouraging others through her involvement and service to the local schools and community. She was the former Executive Director of the Morrow County Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, Branch Office Administrator for Edward Jones in Mount Gilead. She had a vibrant personality that put people at ease, and believed that true joy and happiness isn't found in a life lived for one's self, but rather a life of giving one's self for others and community. During the past year, one highlight for Shelley was helping her daughter Alexa plan her wedding and celebrating that union with her family by her side. Shelley was an avid Northmor football fan, but more importantly, football Mom to her sons Brandon and Benjamin. She actively supported the Northmor Athletic Boosters, serving as an officer and volunteering in many aspects of every sport, a member of the Kiwanis Club of Mount Gilead and Grace Point Church in Galion.

A dedicated wife and mother, first and foremost, Shelley treasured her husband, Matthew, whom she married on August 27, 2000, in Boardman, Ohio, and their children, Alexa (Joey) Lewis, Brandon, and Benjamin and embraced every moment with them.

In addition to her husband and children, Shelley is survived by her parents, William and Connie (Kinzer) Beery, Mount Gilead and sisters, Christey (Dwight) Schmitz, Ontario, and Melisa "Missi" (Christopher) Blunk of Mount Gilead; mother-in-law, Helen Planey, New Middletown; brothers-in-law, Michael (Kelly) Planey; Mark (Kelly) Planey; Marty (Kim) Planey; Mitchell (Sophia) Planey; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved and adored.

Shelley was preceded in death by a son, Levi in 1993.
