Jesus called Ralph Eugene Amick, 87, of Morrow County, home on July 23, 2020. Ralph, affectionately known as Gene by his family and friends, was born on August 17, 1932 in Plymouth to Ralph C. and Doris E. (Calver) Amick.
Gene graduated from Iberia High School in 1950. He worked with his father at Amick’s Farm Equipment, and after the business was sold, he began a 34-year career at General Motors (Mansfield Plant) working in production as M.D. leader, retiring in 1991. For many years, he attended Trinity Lutheran Church, Crestline, serving on the Board of Trustees. He was a member of Moose Club 303, Galion.
Gene enjoyed trap shooting and was an avid hunter. He had fond memories of hunting trips to Wyoming with his father and lifelong friend and cousin, Irwin (Junior) Amick. In his later years, he cooked breakfast for everyone at “deer camp” each morning. He also loved to go morel mushroom hunting each spring. He owned several old Jeeps, taking them off road, plowing snow for the school district and local businesses, or just taking his family for ice cream at the Freezer Fresh.
Gene is remembered fondly as a great father—hauling horses to 4-H events, driving cheerleaders in parades, serving as a driver for Brownies and Girl Scouts with his daughters, and camping and hunting with his son. His children remember hearing, “When the big ball of fire hits the ground, you need to be home!” He was also famous for making one-day trips to visit his out-of-state daughters, hand cranked ice cream on birthdays and holidays, and never forgetting to buy Easter corsages and Valentine candy for his special girls.
Gene is survived by his five children: Susan (Carney) Mangrum, Iberia; Linda (Doug) Algire, York, SC; Cindy (Steve) Shasky, Mansfield; Cathy (Charlie) Lilly, Albemarle, NC; Ralph Jason (Lanetta) Amick, Mansfield; sixteen grandchildren Adrian Algire, Chrissi (Sean) Park, Mikkel (Marilyn) Algire, Charlie (Jennifer) Lilly, Joshua (Amanda) Martin, Jeremy Lilly, Ryan (Reba) Mangrum, Amie Algire, Min Joo (John) Naples, Kalie (Bobby) Daugherty, Emily Shasky, Destiney (Jonathon) Page, Ralph Michael (Cassie) Amick, Alicia Amick, Alexus Amick, Dylon Amick, and 20 great-grandchildren.
