Ruby Mae (Rorick) Grimes-Sowers, 98, of Galion, passed from this life at Mill Creek Nursing Center on November 12, 2020. Because of her love for the soil, she was known for growing and cultivation the most beautiful flowers wherever she lived. She also had a love for all her family’s furry friends.
Ruby was born on January 8, 1922 in Martel to H. Elmer and Maggie (Reece) Rorick who preceded her in death. Upon her graduation from Martel High School she married Clarence L. Grimes who preceded her in death in 1965. Fifteen years later she met and married Richard A. Sowers and he also preceded her in death in 1988.
Ruby was employed as a nurses’s aide and physical therapy aide at Galion Community Hospital and later at Crestline Memorial Hospital for many years. She then pursued a career in hair styling, having graduated from the Marion Beauty Academy, and then opening and operating the Orange Grove Beauty Salon in Galion for several years.
She is survived by a son, Larry L. (Carolyn) Grimes of Galion and son-in-law Edgar Reed of Galion. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Julia (Dann) Noe of Hampstead , N.C., Natalie Flohr of Shelby, Brett (Marla) Grimes of Galion, and Kelly Reed of Galion, as well as 11 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great-grandchildren with two more on the way. She was preceded in death by her daughter; Jewell E. Reed, grandson; Kevin Lee Reed, granddaughter; Tammy Sue Schneider, half-brothers; Carl and Ralph Rorick and a half-sister; Pearl Rice.
Ruby was actively engaged in a daily walking routine which continued after she took up residence at Mill Creek in August of 2011. She also was a faithful member of the Crestline Church of Christ until her health began to decline and she lost her eyesight to macular degeneration. She loved listening to Christian music, especially K-Love, on her radio which ran 24/7 in her room.
Friends may call on Monday, November 16, 2020 from 10:00am to 1:00pm at Mark A. Schneider- Gompf Funeral Home; 303 Portland Way N., Galion. Funeral services will be held immediately following with Minister Adam Witt officiating. Burial will follow in Caledonia Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her first husband.
